Recognizing The Signs Of Addiction In Your Loved Ones

While our physical changes are most apparent as we age, other aspects of ourselves are not so obvious at first glance. This is the case with the changes our loved ones adopt as a direct result of their substance addiction.

Their recreational use of alcohol and other substances can be infrequent at first, but upon becoming dependent, there are critical changes to our loved ones that give off the signs of substance addiction.

Signs Of Physical Change

The physical changes in an addicted person are the most common and noticeable signs of substance abuse. Addictive substances are meant to alter the way we feel about reality, and by doing so, they significantly affect our body. Changes become apparent as a form of neglect in the overall appearance of those loved ones dependent on substances. Their hygiene can be poor, along with a lack of care for healthy eating habits and exercise. Other signs may include:

  • Malnutrition: weight loss.
  • Poor skin complexion, hair, and nail condition.
  • Compulsive eating: weight gain.
  • Development of sores on the face and body.
  • Dilated pupils.
  • Dental problems.

Signs of Behavioural And Emotional Change

Although behavioural and emotional changes are different with regards to the addictive substance being used, most often an addicted individual will noticeably change their behaviour. In some cases cases your loved ones can exhibit the following:

  • Losing interest in things and activities once important to them: schoolwork or employment.
  • Lacking energy to take part in family events.
  • Becoming depressed and having an overall negative outlook on life.
  • Displaying mood swings ranging from sudden to severe.
  • Losing employment, abandoning education.
  • Manifesting violence.
  • Manifesting irritability.
  • Experiencing paranoia and hallucinations.
  • Having erratic sleep patterns: staying awake all night or sleeping during the day.
  • Experiencing suicidal thoughts and talking about suicide.

Criminal Consequences Of Substance Dependence

Another important sign in the changes of your loved one’s behaviour due to substance dependence is their criminal activity and brush-ins with the law. Whether acquiring an illegal street drug (i.e. heroin and cocaine) or being under the influence of drugs and alcohol while operating a vehicle, your loved one is likely to suffer criminal charges and a jail term for their addiction issues. Clearly, in trying to avoid incarceration, you must be proactive and respond to the changes in behaviour of your loved ones who are in the midst of addiction.

If you notice any of the above signs and changes in your loved one’s physical outlook or in their behavioural and emotional states, you must seek help for them immediately. At Muskoka Recovery we offer effective holistic and personalized treatment options for those experiencing substance dependence and can give you peace of mind in treating those closest to you.
